Rory triumphs at Pebble Beach

Having hosted multiple US Open tournaments as well as a PGA Championship, it’s fair to say Pebble Beach is one of the most famous and admired golf courses in all of America.

Pebble Beach also hosts the annual AT&T Pro-Am that kicks off February on the PGA Tour calendar, and it’s always eagerly anticipated by fans. This year was certainly no exception; Rory McIlroy rose above the talent-riddled field of players to claim his 27th PGA Tour title.

Strong from the start with an opening round of 66, Rory was near the hot end of the leaderboard all tournament long. He closed his second round with an eagle on the par-5 18th and kept this momentum through to the Sunday. Staying steady among the pressure, Rory also closed with a round of 66 and kept two strokes ahead of Shane Lowry.

Lowry had scored the exact same number of strokes as Rory on all three rounds ahead of the Sunday, and the pair both started the day on 15-under-par. Lowry stumbled with a few bogeys on his front 9 holes that kept him from catching Rory as they also mirrored each other by scoring 5 birdies on the back 9.

With a decorated career that’s made him one of the most recognizable golfers in the world, Rory McIlroy took a moment post-win to reflect on his performance “Some people would argue the golf courses I have won on are not up to a Pebble Beach or an Augusta, but to win at one of the cathedrals of golf is really, really cool.

I knew today was going to be tough, it was going to be exciting, there were so many guys around the lead I guess with it being Pebble Beach I had to put that to the back of my mind and go out there and try to shoot a score, which I was able to. Really cool to have that walk up 18 and take it all in.”

Rory also expressed this three dream career goals last week; “Winning the Masters, winning an Olympic medal, and another away Ryder Cup.” He’s certainly in the right form to take on two of these goals this year, at Augusta National in a few months’ time, and at Bethpage Black this autumn.
