The world no.1 golfer managed to secure his fourth major trophy while still just shy of his 30th Birthday. Scottie Scheffler charged into the lead at The Open over the course of the weekend and started the Sunday with a 4-stroke lead over China’s Haotong Li.

Scheffler was breezing through Royal Portrush with aplomb at the start of his final round, and built his lead to 7 strokes through securing 3 birdies within his 5 opening holes. A tough double-bogey on the 8th hole seemed not to phase him and he went on to collect 2 more birdies on the 9th and 12th holes.

Nobody could catch Scottie this weekend and he concluded his fourth round by carding a comfortable 3-under 68, securing him a decisive victory over second-placed Harris English. There was speculation as to whether Scottie could break Tiger Woods’ record of winning by 8 strokes as he did at the 2000 Open, but this weekend’s competition fought to the end to keep this from happening.

English carded a final round of 66 to finish on 13-under-par while last week’s Scottish Open winner Chris Gotterup finished in third place one stroke behind him. Ryder Cup players Wyndham Clark and Matt Fitzpatrick ended up tied 4th on 11-under.

With a playful nod to Rory McIlroy, Scheffler thanked the local fans for their enthusiasm in his post-round interview “I know I wasn’t a fan favourite so I appreciate you guys coming out to support. Overall it was a really fun week to be able to play in front of such a great crowd.” Irishman Shane Lowry last won The Open when it was hosted at Royal Portrush back in 2019.

Scheffler has now captured four major trophies; this year’s Claret Jug and PGA Wanamaker trophy, and two Masters green jackets from 2022 and 2024. He doesn’t turn 30 years old until June 21st next year, which is just when the U.S. Open will be concluding at Shinnecock Hills. Could Scheffler bag a career grand slam before his 30th birthday? His form at the moment certainly doesn’t rule it out.
